The manufacture of cars in Spain enters a state of alarm. Sharp drop in production due to weak markets and the lack of microchips.
The month of May closes with a total of 182,838 units produced, a figure that represents 37.8% less compared to the same month in 2019 . According to the statement issued by the ANFAC employer , the shortage of microchips that has been registered since the beginning of the year, together with the greater weakness of the national market and export markets , is negatively conditioning the rhythm of vehicle production in Spain , accumulating a 19% drop in production in the first five months of the year to 1,032,861 units manufactured.
The comparison is still carried out with the same period of 2019 since, in May 2020, there were still factories closed due to the pandemic and lockdown.
The lack of sufficient semiconductor manufacturing capacity due to high demand is affecting not only Spanish factories but all of Europe . In order to adapt the rhythm to the availability of the components, stoppages and delays have been made in the cadence of the factories’ production lines . Forecasts suggest that the shortage of microchips will continue to be a problem for vehicle factories at least during the first half of 2022.
At the same time, the general context of falling vehicle sales in the main countries is weighing on demand for vehicles manufactured in Spain . Outstanding markets such as France (-22.7%), Germany (-26.7%), United Kingdom (-30.8%) and, to a lesser extent, Italy (-19.3%) accumulate significant falls until May, without achieving the sales levels recorded in 2019.
In turn, Spain registers the largest drop in the main European markets (-35.9%), a particularly relevant figure if one takes into account that one out of every four vehicles sold in Spain is of national manufacture.
In the month of May, exports have obtained a strong decrease of 34.3% compared to the same month of 2019, adding a total of 157,635 units shipped outside our borders. For the accumulated until the fifth month , 884,244 vehicles have been exported, which brings the fall to 13.7%.
